Selenium is an essential mineral for the proper functioning of the body. Although it's needed in small ways, it's incredibly important for our health! Check it out below:
Selenium is an essential mineral; our bodies don't produce it , so we need to obtain it through our diet. It acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting cells against damage caused by free radicals, and also participates in several specific functions.
It is present in small quantities in soil and food, selenium is also linked to hormonal regulation and strengthening the immune system.
This mineral has several important functions in the body:
Selenium deficiency can bring some signs, such as:
It is worth remembering that, in more severe cases, a lack of selenium may be related to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and neurological dysfunction.
Selenium is present in various foods, especially in natural sources such as:
Brazil nuts are nature's greatest source of selenium!
A single nut can provide the recommended daily amount of this mineral. Therefore, consumption should be moderate; 1 to 2 nuts per day are sufficient.
At MAHTA, we use Brazil nuts as the base for our Brazil nut powder drink, made with nuts grown by local communities in the Amazon. This production values traditional knowledge, generates income for the families involved, and also preserves the forest. This ingredient is rich in selenium and other essential nutrients.
The recommended daily intake of selenium varies depending on age and stage of life.
For adults the recommendation is 55 micrograms (mcg) per day.
Pregnant women should consume about 60 mcg/day, and lactating women, 70 mcg/day.
Selenium may be recommended when there is a deficiency, or in situations that deactivate antioxidant support, such as inflammation, low immunity, or thyroid problems. It is essential to consult a healthcare professional before starting any supplementation!
