A normal gut microbiota has functions such as:

  • Metabolism of nutrients from food: transforms fiber into short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), which are a source of energy for the intestinal mucosa;

  • Use of medicines: metabolizes some drugs, releasing their active portions;

  • Maintaining the integrity of the intestinal mucosa: preserves the intestinal barrier, preventing inflammation;

  • Modulation of the immune system: stimulates the production of defense cells and protects against infections;

  • Protection against pathogens: prevents the colonization of harmful bacteria.

How important is the microbiota?

The gut microbiota is essential for the proper functioning of the body. It not only aids digestion and nutrient absorption but is also crucial for the immune system and the production of neurotransmitters.


When it is out of balance (dysbiosis) , it can cause problems such as intestinal diseases, infections and even influence mood and well-being.

What are the functions of gut bacteria?

Gut bacteria perform several important functions:

  • They produce protective substances: Fatty acids and bacteriocins, which stimulate the growth of organic bacteria.

  • Metabolize unabsorbed nutrients: bacteria have the ability to recover unabsorbed dietary sugars (lactose and alcohol) and convert them into short-chain fatty acids, which are used as an energy source by the intestinal mucosa.


  • They produce vitamins and nutrients: such as vitamin K and other B vitamins.

  • They act as protection against toxins: some proteases that inactivate bacterial toxins.

  • They regulate intestinal functions: through the production of neurotransmitters and neuromodulators.

What type of bacteria is present in the intestine?

Actinobacteria:

This group is incredibly important for maintaining a healthy gut. Actinobacteria help produce vitamins, strengthen the immune system, and prevent the action of harmful bacteria. They also contribute to good digestion and maintain a healthy intestinal barrier.

Bacteroidetes:

Widely present in the human gut, Bacteroidetes are excellent at fermenting fiber and carbohydrates, generating energy for the body. They also help regulate the immune system.

Two genres stand out:

  • Prevotella : linked to diets rich in carbohydrates and fiber.

  • Bacteroides : more common in diets high in protein and fat.

When this group is out of balance, it can contribute to inflammatory diseases, such as Crohn's disease.

Firmicutes:

This is one of the most diverse and complex groups. Firmicutes include bacteria known as Lactobacillus (widely used as probiotics) and Clostridium (some harmful).

They are influenced by diet:

  • Diets rich in fats favor the growth of this group.

  • Diets rich in fiber and vegetables help maintain balance.

In excess, firmicutes may be associated with weight gain and chronic inflammation.

Proteobacteria:

Proteobacteria are common, but their increase can indicate something is wrong. A well-known example is Escherichia coli (E. coli) , which normally lives in the intestine but in large numbers can cause infections.

They are strongly influenced by diet and environmental factors. Excessive growth can be linked to diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) .

The gut microbiota is an ecosystem essential for health. Its functions range from digestion and nutrient production to disease protection. Maintaining this balance is crucial, and this can be achieved through a balanced diet rich in fiber and the use of probiotics when necessary.
